필라델피아 학생, 전 세계 어린이들의 시력을 지키기 위한 글로벌 캠페인 주도
필라델피아의 학생 조엘 정(Joelle Chong) 은 개인적인 경험을 전 세계적인 실천으로 바꾸고 있다.
그녀는 청소년이 주도하는 비영리단체 아이 히어로즈 글로벌(Eye Heroes Global) 을 통해, 태양의 보이지 않는 자외선으로부터 어린이들의 눈을 보호하기 위한 활동을 전 세계 네 개 대륙에서 펼치고 있다.
조엘은 필라델피아 클래시컬 스쿨(Philadelphia Classical School) 에 재학 중이며, 아이 히어로즈 글로벌의 창립자이자 대표이다. 이 단체는 무료 선글라스와 시력 보호용 안경, 그리고 조엘이 직접 저술한 어린이용 교육 도서, 다국어(영어·스페인어·한국어) 전단지, 눈 건강을 배우는 창의적 체험 활동 등을 전 세계 어린이들에게 제공하고 있다.
이 아이디어는 개인적인 경험에서 시작되었다. “가족과 해변 여행을 갔을 때, 강한 햇빛 때문에 제 눈이 화상을 입었어요.” 조엘은 회상했다. “정말 무서웠고, 대부분의 아이들이 눈도 피부처럼 햇볕에 탈 수 있다는 사실을 전혀 모른다는 걸 깨달았어요.” 단체가 설립된 이후, 아이 히어로즈 글로벌은 지금까지 선글라스 3,000개, 돋보기 및 시력 교정용 안경 1,500개, 교육용 전단지 30,000부, 그리고 조엘이 집필한 교육 도서 3,000권 이상을 배포했다.

Philadelphia Student Leads Global Effort to Protect Children’s Eyes
Philadelphia student Joelle Chong is turning a personal experience into global action. Through her youth-run nonprofit, Eye Heroes Global, she is helping children across four continents protect their eyes from the sun’s invisible damage, starting right here in her own community.
On a sunny Saturday at Rittenhouse Square, high school senior Joelle Chong hands out brightly colored sunglasses to passing families. Behind the simple gesture lies a larger purpose: helping children around the world protect their vision from an invisible danger, the sun.
Joelle, a student at Philadelphia Classical School, is the founder of Eye Heroes Global, a youth-run nonprofit that distributes free sunglasses, eyeglasses, and educational materials, including a children’s book she authored, flyers she designed, and crafts and activities that help children learn about eye health and care. The idea began in a personal way. “When I was on a family beach trip, I actually burned my eyes from the sunlight,” she recalled. “It scared me, and it made me realize that most children never learn that their eyes can get sunburned just like their skin.”
Since its founding, Eye Heroes Global has distributed more than 3,000 sunglasses, 1,500 reading glasses, 30,000 flyers, and 3,000 educational books authored by Joelle. The organization has reached communities in Philadelphia and other parts of North America, as well as across Africa, Asia, and South America, and it continues to expand its impact to new regions.
At a recent outreach event in Philadelphia, Chong spoke with families and fellow students about the importance of UV protection, especially for children who spend long hours outdoors. “Most kids don’t think about it until it’s too late,” she said. “Just one conversation can change that.” As Eye Heroes Global grows, Joelle and her team are partnering with foster-care programs and youth centers across Pennsylvania to reach more families. “Every pair of glasses is a small shield,” she said. “But more importantly, it’s a reminder that health education doesn’t have to wait until adulthood.”
