남부뉴저지통합한국학교 예술단(교장 김정숙)은 2월 한 달 동안 각 지역 로컬 커뮤니티와 함께 설날 및 삼일절 축하행사 초청공연을 순회했다.

2월 10일 오후 1시40분에는 뉴저지 주 뉴왁 미술 박물관에서 주최하는 커뮤니티데이 음력 새해(Community Day: Lunar New Year) 행사에서 부채춤과 사물놀이를 선보였다. 동그랗게 모인 200여명의 관객은 한국 고유의 우아한 멋과 흥 있는 장단에 환호와 박수갈채를 보냈다.

24일 정오 대남부뉴저지한인회에서 주최하는 삼일절 기념식에 본교 예술단은 합창단이 애국가, 미국가, 고향의 봄, 무용단이 창작무용 ‘작약지증’과 부채춤을, 타악팀이 모듬북과 사물놀이를 공연했다. 매주 토요일 한국학교 교과 과정으로 한국어와 함께 분야별 전통 공연예술을 연마하고 있는 학교 예술단은 뉴저지 주 뿐 아니라 인근 타주에서 초청하는 각종 커뮤니티 행사에 참여해 한인 차세대로서 자긍심도 증진하고 전통한국문화예술의 멋도 알리는 문화홍보대사 역할을 수행하고 있다.

정안젤라 교감은 “타주 행사장까지 왕복 7시간을 마다하지 않고 공연에 참가하는 학생들과 학부모님들의 열정에 감동했고, 학생들의 코리안 아메리칸으로서의 정체성 함양과 뿌리교육에 더욱 매진하겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
The next-generation of Korean American actively engages with the community from Lunar New Year to March 1st Independence Movement Day.
The KSSNJ K-Arts Company (Principal Chungsook Kim) toured various local communities throughout February, presenting invitation performances for Lunar New Year and Independence Movement Day. On February 10th, at 1:40 PM, they showcased Buchaechum (Fan Dance) and Samulnori at the Community Day Lunar New Year event hosted by the Newark Museum in New Jersey. Over 200 gathered spectators enthusiastically applauded the elegant and lively performances reflecting Korea’s unique charm. Later that day, at 7:00 PM, the K-Dance Company participated in a major local event at Upper Dublin High School in Pennsylvania, presenting Samgomu (three-drum dance) and Buchaechum (Fan Dance) to celebrate Lunar New Year.
On the 17th, the KSSNJ K-Choir performed Kimchi Taryeong (Kimchi folk song) and the songs “Hometown in Spring,” while the K-Dance Company presented the creative dance “Peony Dance” and Fan Dance at the Lunar New Year event organized by the Moorestown Library in New Jersey. On the 22nd, at 7:30 PM, they performed Modeumbuk (a drum ensemble) at the New York Theatre in Queens, hosted by the New York Korean Traditional Music Association. The final performance concluded with a collaborative show featuring the New York Korean Traditional Music Association’s professional performance team and Samdo Samulnori (three-drum play).
On February 24 at noon, the KSSNJ K-Dance Company participated in the Independence Movement Day commemoration event hosted by the Greater Southern New Jersey Korean Association. The K-Choir performed the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Hometown in Spring,” and the K-Dance Company presented the creative dance “Peony Dance” and Buchaechum (Fan Dance). The percussion team showcased various drums, Modeumbuk and Samulnori.
Engaging in weekly performances as part of the Korean school curriculum, the K-Arts Company not only contributes to enhancing the pride of Korean descendants in New Jersey but also serves as cultural ambassadors, promoting traditional Korean arts and culture in various community events in nearby states. Vice Principal Angela Jung expressed her impression, stating, “I was moved by the passion of students and parents participating in performances without hesitation, commuting for seven hours to events in other states. I am committed to fostering the Korean American identity of the students and dedicating myself to root education.”
